Bihar Govt. Seeks Special Package to Combat Extremism

Posted by Indian Vanguard on April 17, 2007

The Nitish government, following a high-level meeting with top Bihar bureaucrats on Monday, asked the Central government to provide a special package of Rs. 19 crore to battle extremism saying the money would be utilized to initiate various development schemes as that was the only way to end radicalism in Bihar.

The meeting was also attended by the Additional Home Secretary (Naxal Operation) Vinay Kumar who said a final decision on the proposal will be taken after holding meetings with Union Ministers.

"Though overall the Naxal-sponsored violence has lessened in Bihar since 2005, it still remains a huge problem in the state. To combat extremism, currently there are 30 companies of para-military force in Bihar to keep such activities in check," Kumar said.

Among those who were present in the meeting included Bihar Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah, Chief Secretary A. K. Chowdhary, Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha, and a number of senior officials from various branches of the law enforcement agencies
